WebFonts scheduled to go live on December 12

Looking at a website, only to be presented with little squares is the result of a computer not having the fonts necessary to show the characters used for a language. There is a modern method of providing people with a missing font; this is done by sending a font together with the text that is to be displayed.

The Localisation team of the Wikimedia Foundation is working hard to finish the WebFonts functionality. This will serve you with freely licensed fonts when these fonts are not present on your system. For regular users, there will be multiple fonts to choose from or to select none at all.

At translatewiki.net, we run the latest version of the WebFonts software at all times. This allows you to get familiar with the look and feel and follow its progress. To make it easy for you, we will copy the text of the article on your language from your wiki to the Portal:**/Webfonts page at translatewiki. The fonts that we use are the best Freely Licensed fonts we can find. For the Indic languages this is typically the Lohit font that is used in many Linux distributions.

The agenda of the localisation team is that WebFonts will go live on Monday December 12. At the India hackathon we learned about issues with some of the fonts and several issues we were able to resolve and others resulted in the filing of bugs at Red Hat. We are looking into having a triage meeting with Red Hat engineers to assess and address any and all issues.

When there are real issues that prevent the reading of the text, we may consider to postpone the WebFonts implementation for a particular language. We are open to technical solutions that improve the usability or acceptance. Apart from that, Wikipedia exist to bring information to everybody and WebFonts allows us to increase out audience.

Summary and perspectives from Discussions with Indic language wikimedians - 2011

I have sent a detailed note to the various local language and India community mailing lists summarizing my discussions with various Indic editors. In this note, I have also shared my perspectives on a series of issues related to community building (keeping existing editors, welcoming back old editors, attracting newbies, improving outreach, encouraging communication, collaborating on articles, and celebrating success), project quality (discouraging the use of bots for content creation and being more selective in adoption of English wikipedia policies) as well as on readership. It is a long post but I request you to go through this page in meta wiki. Please share your comments and feedback as a reply below this, or on the meta talk page of my post, or directly to me. Spreading the wings of Odia community

Dear Odia wikipedians,

When started working on this note I was thinking about the state of Odia Wikipedia 12 months before! Odia wiki community has rewrtten history in the span of past 12 months. You showed how a wiki project can be build brick by brick. I would like to congratulate you for the good work you are doing Now we need to take it forward. I am sharing few ideas for that.

Over the past few weeks we have discussed the current state and the future of Indic wiki projects - and quite a few of you have helped me get a richer understanding of Odia community and projects. And I have provided the summary of discussions and my ideas about taking Indic wiki projects forward here. During our discussion many of you have asked for clear ideas to improve the strength of the community and quality of projects. I have been thinking about what would be most appropriate for Odia community and I want to share some specific suggestions for Odia wikipedia. I am recommending these based on ideas from Odia editors as well as learnings from other Indic communities which have relevance for Odia.

As of now we have around 10 active wikipedians for Odia wikipedia and we have close to 1750 articles. I think the single most powerful way of achieving the huge potential for Odiai wiki projects is to build the community and thereby increase the number of articles. Increase communication and collaboration between editors is one way of doing this since that will retain existing editors and attract more users to Odia wiki. Odia community may consider working on more frequent interaction (online and face-to-face), increasing the spirit of common purpose and bonding amongst editors and last, but not least, attracting newbies.

Below are some points that I request Odia wiki community to consider.

Wiki meetups

Physical meetings between wikipedians is a really strong way to help the growth of Indic wikipedias. And I am glad that Odia wiki community understood the importance of this and already started doing wiki meetups in Bhubaneshwar and Cuttack. Please spread this across to other places, especially inside Odisha. As you know meetups connect us with like-minded people, build friendships, help share ideas and plan initiatives. For small communities, there is always the feeling that we are all alone - and meetups help to correct this perception and this is a source of inspiration. Please plan more meetups. Physical meetings between wikipedians is very much required to grow a healthy wiki community in any indic langauge wikipedia. I will help in every possible way to support all the initiatives regarding this.

WikiProjects

As most of you know WikiProjects are informal groups of wiki editors who work work together as a team to improve Wikipedia. These groups often focus on a specific topic area (for example, articles related to Odia language or a interest area like Odia movies or regional politics or Odia literature or global topics like medicine) or a specific kind of task (for example, expanding stub articles). It allows editors to work with other editors - all of whom share a passion for the subject or task. It has worked really well in many languages across India. (For example, Malayalam wikipeida has a project on "Theyyam" an art form of Kerala, “Astronomy" project, "Stub elimination" project, Categorization project, and so on. Group of 3 or 4 Malayalam wiki community members interested in these projects are actively collabrating on these articles to enhance it ). The idea I want to emphasis is, along with working on articles on our interest it will be nice if we could start collaborating with other community members. That will enhance our wiki editing experince and is good for the growth of community. That will help more existing users to continue in wiki for a long time.

Some suggestions for wiki projects are:

• Start a wiki project to create/expand all articles related to Odia language
• Start a wiki project to create/expand articles about districts/villages of Odisha and other states of India.
• Start a wiki project to expand the stubs
• Start a wiki project to identify and remove potential copyright violated images and move the rest of the free images to commons
• Start a project on an area which 2-3 editors feel passionate about - whatever the subject might be.

In fact if we could get to know the interest of users we could easily design various small wiki projects as is happening in English wikipedia. The point I want to emphasis is that collaboration between editors will ensure a healthy community so that we can do more programs. The best way of collaboration is doing what we all love best - editing. So let us collaborate on what we love doing most. Rememeber along with building community we need to make sure all the important topics relevant to Odia people are added to Odia wikipedia soon. That will attract more Odia speakers to wiki. As you might have noticed for all Indic wikipedias readership is growing. So it is important that we add more articles to wiki and that can be used to build an even bigger community.

Outreach

You are already doing as much as you can. But still let me some important points.

To encourage users to start editing in wiki some of us need to take initiative for some outreach activities. Outreach can be of 3 types - offline, online, and using media.

Offline Outreach: Wiki workshops

Wiki workshop is the best way to attract more users to wikipedia. We should start doing more workshops to attract more users to wiki editing. Again in Delhi, we have the required space and infrastructure so please feel free to use it whenever Odia wikipedians require it. Since Subhashish is in Delhi soon we shall use Subhashish to build an Odia wiki community in Delhi also. For other locations if any one is interested to conduct wiki workshops please let us all know and we will work out some way of supporting for this. More important is, community members need to come forward. I am happy that many of you are already coming forward.

Online Outreach: Social Networking

I do not need to tell Odia wiki community about this. Community know the importance of using social networking sites for outreach. You are doing this effectively. Please continue doing that. And find more innovative ways of reaching more Odia speakers using various channels.

Online Outreach: Odia Blogs

Use Odia blogs to reach out to the Odia online community. They are the people whom you can easily be converted to Wikipedians since they know Odia typing and have a flare for Odia computing. You need to just tell them about the importance of Wikipedia. It would be very useful to get in touch with popular bloggers and ask them to inform their readers about Odia Wikipedia and other wiki projects, encourage more people to consider editing and point interested people.

Odia Newspapers & TV Channels

Odia newspapers and TV channels have mass outreach among Odia people. Can we establish contacts with journalists and ask for their support in covering Odia Wikipedia. Journalists always look for news items that are directly relevant to their audience and something like Odia Wikipedia crossing 5000 articles is a perfect story. Any further achievement of Odia community like when you cross the 100 active editor mark, and the 500 editor mark, when you do an offline release etc. - will all get you good media coverage. This will help in building the community, increasing motivation of existing editors and attract new editors.

Can I request as many Odia Wikipedians to share you thoughts about these ideas. Do you think they are the right ideas for Odia? If so and if not, why? Would you suggest any alternate ideas? If you like these ideas, which ones would you like to work on? Is there any help you need? Would you be interested in getting connected to other community members who might also be interested? Please share your ideas.

The reason I am asking everyone to participate is it will help us all as a community to identify people who have similar interests and to start interacting and working closely on these interests. The ideal outcome of this post is for the community to start planning some of these activities as a group. There are two ways of doing this. One is, if community members start discussing on this page and form groups interested in particular ideas. Our primary aim is adding more number of users and creating more number of articles.You told about Odia newspaper and television but as per my knowledge the reporters are not interested in this type of news and they give very less priority to this. Online outreach concerned with Odia blog suggestion is nice because those type of people can easily get the things and can be quickly associate with us. As a new user I'll say that wiki meetups are very helpful for me. About project I can only say that I'm ready to work on any project but the people who have more experience they must initialize(start) the project first. Outreach

Wiki Meetups/Workshops:I am also starting a discussion on WP:VP for everyone. Anybody interested conducting any meetups/workshops in Odisha can give their views and ideas.

Blogs, Newspapers & TV Channels: I request everyone who have contacts to journalists, TV reporters can approach them for coverages for Odia Wikipedia. Like Subha has own websites, he can reach out to Odia communities. If anybody else has it please do so. Or you know anybody who has blogs, personal websites request them to do the same. As we all know there is a scarcity of odia wikipedians. I hope the situation will change after implementing your suggestions. As per Odia Wikipedians discussion at recently concluded 2nd Odia Wikipedia monthly meetup at Cuttack, it is proposed to create all the 500 articles which are selected for offline distribution in other language.

In my opinion by convincing some regular columnists of Odia newspapers to contribute to Odia Wikipedia will raise both the quality and quantity of articles.

A small request for help: please provide us the list of top 100 enwp articles (with maximum page view) accessed from Odisha and also top 100 enwp articles related to Odisha (accessed from all over the world). I think these are the suitable articles to attract more Odia Wikipedia(En) users to Odia wikipedia.

Thank you all Odia wiki community members for showing great enthusuaim to take the Odia wiki forward. I should say I am convinced that Odia wiki projects has a great future ahead when it has wonderful users like you contributing to it.

Since all of you are getting ready to start on some interesting projects, I am providing you an idea for an excellent Wiki Project which helped Malayalam wikipedia to grow its active community by almost 2 times. The idea for first wiki project is to document (that is create or enrich existing articles) about all the distrcts and grama anchyats of Odisha state. I created a smaple page for that here. Sorry I created that in English since I do not read, write, or understand Odia. But I created that just to give you some guidance. Once we made all the plans we need to create a good page in odia itself. Before we start working on that, let me all invite to that page and start asking all the queries you have about this particular wiki project. It is better I will use that strategy since I do not have any idea about how you understood wiki projects. So please come to that page and ask all questions related to that on its talk page. We shall discuss further there.

Wiki project is just one of the idea, we shall think various other ideas as we move forward. But let us start with this, most of us like to write about our district, grama panchayat, or village. This is a fantastic idea to start a project related to villages/grama panchayatas/panchayata samiti articles. I have created a template article which will help anyone who is interested for the village/grama-panchayata related projetcs.
