ଭାରତର ଜାତିପ୍ରଥା ହେଉଛି ଜାତିର ତଥାକଥିତ ନୃତତ୍ତ୍ୱଭିତ୍ତିକ ଉଦାହରଣ । ଏହାର ଉତ୍ପତ୍ତି ପ୍ରାଚୀନ ଭାରତରେ ହୋଇଥିଲା ଏବଂ ମଧ୍ୟଯୁଗୀୟ, ପ୍ରାକ-ଆଧୁନିକ ଏବଂ ଆଧୁନିକ ଭାରତରେ, ବିଶେଷ କରି ମୋଗଲ ସାମ୍ରାଜ୍ୟ ଏବଂ ବ୍ରିଟିଶ ଶାସନ ସମୟରେ, ବିଭିନ୍ନ ଶାସକୀୟ ଅଭିଯାତମାନଙ୍କଦ୍ୱାରା ରୂପାନ୍ତରିତ ହୋଇଥିଲା ।[୧][୨][୩][୪] ଏହା ଅଧୁନା ଭାରତରେ ସକାରାତ୍ମକ କାର୍ଯ୍ୟକ୍ରମର ଆଧାର ।[୫] ଜାତିପ୍ରଥାରେ ଦୁଇଟି ଭିନ୍ନ ଭିନ୍ନ ଧାରଣା ରହିଛି: ବର୍ଣ୍ଣ ଏବଂ ଜାତି । ଏହି ଦୁଇ ବ୍ୟବସ୍ଥାକୁ ଏହି ପ୍ରଥାର ବିଭିନ୍ନ ସ୍ତରର ବିଶ୍ଳେଷଣ ଭାବରେ ବିବେଚନା କରାଯାଇପାରେ ।

ବର୍ତ୍ତମାନର ପ୍ରଚଳିତ ଜାତିପ୍ରଥା ଭାରତରେ ମୋଗଲ ଯୁଗର ପତନ ଏବଂ ବ୍ରିଟିଶ ଉପନିବେଶ ସରକାରଙ୍କ ଉତ୍ଥାନ ସମୟରେ ବିକାଶର ଫଳାଫଳ ବୋଲି ବିବେଚିତ ହୁଏ ।[୧][୬] ମୋଗଲ ଯୁଗର ପତନରେ ଶକ୍ତିଶାଳୀ ପୁରୁଷମାନଙ୍କର ଉତ୍ଥାନ ଦେଖାଗଲା । ସେମାନେ ରାଜା, ପୁରୋହିତ ଏବଂ ଧର୍ମଶାସ୍ତ୍ରସହିତ ସମ୍ବନ୍ଧିତ ଥିଲେ ଓ ଜାତି ସ୍ଥାନୀୟ ରାଜକୀୟ ଏବଂ ସାମରିକ ଉପାଧିକୁ ଭିତ୍ତି କରି ଅନେକ ଜାତିହୀନ ସାମାଜିକ ଗୋଷ୍ଠୀକୁ ଭିନ୍ନ ଜାତି ସମ୍ପ୍ରଦାୟରେ ପୁନଃ ଆକାର ଦେଇଥିଲେ ।[୭] ବ୍ରିଟିଶ ଶାସନ ଏହି ବିକାଶକୁ ଆଗକୁ ବଢ଼ାଇ କଠୋର ଜାତି ସଂଗଠନକୁ ପ୍ରଶାସନର ଏକ କେନ୍ଦ୍ରୀୟ ବ୍ୟବସ୍ଥାରେ ପରିଣତ କଲା ।[୬] ୧୮୬୦ରୁ ୧୯୨୦ ମସିହା ମଧ୍ୟରେ ବ୍ରିଟିଶମାନେ ଜାତିପ୍ରଥାକୁ ସେମାନଙ୍କ ଶାସନ ବ୍ୟବସ୍ଥାରେ ପ୍ରସ୍ତୁତ କରିଥିଲେ ଏବଂ କେବଳ ଖ୍ରୀଷ୍ଟିଆନ ଏବଂ ନିର୍ଦ୍ଦିଷ୍ଟ ଜାତିର ଲୋକଙ୍କୁ ପ୍ରଶାସନିକ ଚାକିରି ଏବଂ ବରିଷ୍ଠ ନିଯୁକ୍ତି ପ୍ରଦାନ କରିଥିଲେ ।[୮] ୧୯୨୦ ମସିହାରେ ସାମାଜିକ ଅଶାନ୍ତି ବଢ଼ିବା ପରେ ଏହା ପରିବର୍ତ୍ତନ ହୋଇଥିଲା ।[୯] ତା' ପରଠାରୁ ଉପନିବେଶ ପ୍ରଶାସନ ନିମ୍ନ ଜାତିମାନଙ୍କ ପାଇଁ ସରକାରୀ ଚାକିରିର ଏକ ନିର୍ଦ୍ଦିଷ୍ଟ ପ୍ରତିଶତ ଆରକ୍ଷଣ କରି ସକରାତ୍ମକ ଭେଦଭାବର ନୀତି ଆରମ୍ଭ କରିଥିଲା । ୧୯୪୮ରେ ଜାତି ଆଧାରରେ ନକାରାତ୍ମକ ଭେଦଭାବକୁ ଆଇନଦ୍ୱାରା ନିଷେଧ କରାଯାଇଥିଲା ଏବଂ ଭାରତୀୟ ସମ୍ବିଧାନରେ ଏହାକୁ ଆହୁରି ବଳବତ୍ତର କରାଯାଇଥିଲା । ତେବେ ଭାରତର ବିଭିନ୍ନ ସ୍ଥାନରେ ଏହି ପ୍ରଥା ପ୍ରଚଳିତ ।[୧୦] ଭାରତରେ ୩,୦୦୦ ଜାତି ଏବଂ ୨୫,୦୦୦ ଉପଜାତି ଅଛନ୍ତି ଏବଂ ପ୍ରତ୍ୟେକ ଏକ ନିର୍ଦ୍ଦିଷ୍ଟ ବୃତ୍ତି ସହିତ ଜଡ଼ିତ |[୧୧]
