ଇତିହାସ ଅନୁଯାୟୀ ପୁରୀ ଗଜପତି ମହାରାଜାଙ୍କ ନିର୍ଦ୍ଦେଶକ୍ରମେ ହଟ୍ଟ ଓ ମଲ୍ଲ ନାମକ ଦୁଇଭାଇ ଏଠାରେ ଶଙ୍କ ଓ ମହୁରୀ ନାମକ ଦୁଇ ଗ୍ରାମ ବସାଇଥିଲେ୤ବସାଇଥିଲେ । କାଳକ୍ରମେ ଏହି ଦୁଇଗାଁ ମିଶି ଏବେ ଶଙ୍ଖାମେରି ହୋଇଛି୤ହୋଇଛି । ଦୁଇଭାଇ ନିଜର ଗଡ଼ ତିଆରି କରିବା ନିମନ୍ତେ ସ୍ଥାନ ସନ୍ଧାନ କଲାବେଳେ, ଗୋଟିଏ ଶବରଙ୍କ ଦଖଲରେ ଥିବା ଗୋଟିଏ ଜାଗାରେ ଅଲୌକିକ ଘଟଣା ଦେଖି ଜାଣିଲେ ଯେ ତାହା ହିଁ ବୀରମାଟି, ଗଡ଼ ନିର୍ମାଣ ନିମନ୍ତେ ଉପଯୁକ୍ତ ସ୍ଥାନ୤ସ୍ଥାନ । କିନ୍ତୁ ଶବର ନିଜର ଆସ୍ଥାନ ଖାଲି କରିବାକୁ ପ୍ରସ୍ତୁତ ନଥିଲେ୤ନଥିଲେ । ତେଣୁ ଦୁଇଭାଇ ଯୁଦ୍ଧ କଲେ, ଯୁଦ୍ଧରେ ଶବରଙ୍କ ମୃତ୍ୟୁ ପରେ ଶବରୀଙ୍କ ସହ ମଧ୍ୟ ଯୁଦ୍ଧ କଲେ୤କଲେ । ଶବରୀ ମଧ୍ୟ ହାରିଲେ, ମୃତ୍ୟୁ ପୂର୍ବରୁ ସେ ଦୁଇଭାଇଙ୍କୁ ଖାରୋଡ଼ର ମହାକାଳୀ ଓ ମାଭଟ୍ଟାରିକାଙ୍କୁ ପୂଜା କରିବାକୁ ଉପଦେଶ ଦେଲେ୤ଦେଲେ । ଏହା ପରେ ଦୁଇଭାଇ ସେଠରେ ମାଙ୍କ ମନ୍ଦିର ନିର୍ମାଣ କରିଥିଲେ୤କରିଥିଲେ । ଭଟ୍ଟାରିକାଙ୍କ ଏକ ନାମ ବୃହଦମ୍ବା, ଅନୁସାରେ ସେମାନେ ନିଜର ରାଜ୍ୟକୁ ନାମିତ କରିଥିଲେ, ପରେ ତାହା ଅପଭ୍ରଂଶ ହୋଇ ବଡ଼ମ୍ବା ହୋଇଅଛି୤ହୋଇଅଛି । <ref>ସମ୍ବାଦ, ୨୩ଅକ୍ଟୋବର ୨୦୧୨, ପୃଷ୍ଠା:୦୨</ref>
