ଏସ୍କେରିସିଆ କୋଲାଇ (ଇଂରାଜୀ ଭାଷାରେ Escherichia coli) (/ˌɛʃəˈrɪkiə ˈkl/), [୧] ଅନ୍ୟ ନାମ ଇ.କୋଲାଇ (E. coli) (/ˌ ˈkl/),[୨] ଏହା ଏକ ଗ୍ରାମ ନେଗେଟିଭ ଜୀବାଣୁ (Gram-negative), ଫ୍ୟାକଲ୍‌ଟେଟିଭ ଅନେରୋବ (facultative anaerobic), ରଡ୍ ଆକାରର (rod-shaped), କୋଲାଇଫର୍ମ ଜୀବାଣୁ (coliform bacterium) ଯାହାର ଜାତି ଏସ୍କେରିସିଆ ଓ ଏମାନେ ସାଧାରଣତଃ ଉଷ୍ମରକ୍ତ ବିଶିଷ୍ଟ (warm-blooded) ପ୍ରାଣୀମାନଙ୍କର ଅନ୍ତନଳୀର ନିମ୍ନଭାଗରେ ମିଳନ୍ତି । [୩][୪] ଅଧିକାଂଶ ଇ କୋଲାଇ ସ୍ଟ୍ରେନ (strains) ବିପଦଶୂନ୍ୟ ଅଟନ୍ତି କିନ୍ତୁ କେତେକ ସେରୋଟାଇପ ହୋଷ୍ଟ ଦେହରେ ବିଷକ୍ରିୟା ଓ ଖାଦ୍ୟ ପ୍ରଦୂଷଣ ସୃଷ୍ଟି କରନ୍ତି; ଏଥିଯୋଗୁ ଖାଦ୍ୟପଦାର୍ଥ ଫେରେଇଦିଆଯାଏ । [୫][୬] ଏମାନଙ୍କ ମଧ୍ୟରୁ ବିପଦଶୂନ୍ୟ ସ୍ଟ୍ରେନ ଜୀବାଣୁଗୁଡ଼ିକ ଅନ୍ୟ ଅଣୁଜୀବମାନଙ୍କ ସ‌ହିତ ଅନ୍ତନଳୀରେ ସାଧାରଣତଃ ବାସ କରନ୍ତି ଓ ହୋଷ୍ଟମାନଙ୍କ ଦେହରେ ଭିଟାମିନ କେ ଜୀବସାର କେ ପ୍ରସ୍ତୁତ କରନ୍ତି,[୭] ଓ ରୋଗ ସୃଷ୍ଟିକାରୀ ଜୀବାଣୁମନଙ୍କର କଲୋନୀ ତିଆରିକୁ ବାଧା ଦିଅନ୍ତି । [୮][୯] ମଳ ସ‌ହିତ ଇ କୋଲାଇ ପରିବେଶକୁ ଠେଲିହୋଇ ବାହାରିଯାଆନ୍ତି । ମଳ ଭିତରେ ରହି ଏରୋବିକ ସ୍ଥିତିରେ ୩ ଦିନ ମଧ୍ୟରେ ନିଜ ସଂଖ୍ୟା ଅହେତୁକ ଭାବରେ ବୃଦ୍ଧି କରନ୍ତି ଓ ପରେ ସଂଖ୍ୟା କମିଯାଏ । [୧୦]

ଅନ୍ତନଳୀ ଅଣୁଜୀବଙ୍କ ମଧ୍ୟରେ ପ୍ରାୟ ୧% ଇ. କୋଲାଇ ଓ ଅନ୍ୟାନ୍ୟ ଫ୍ୟାକଲ୍‌ଟେଟିଭ ଆନେରୋବିକ ଅର୍ଗାନିଜ୍ମ (facultative anaerobes) ମିଶି ରହନ୍ତି,[୧୧] ଓ ମଳ-ମୁଖ ରାସ୍ତାରେ (fecal–oral transmission) ମୁଖ୍ୟତଃ ଜୀବାଣୁ ଯାଇ ରୋଗ ରୋଗ ସୃଷ୍ଟିକରନ୍ତି । ଦେହ ବାହାରେ ଜୀବାଣୁ ଅଳ୍ପ ସମୟ ରହିପାରନ୍ତି ଓ ସେହି ସମୟରେ ନମୁନା ନେଇ ମଳ ପ୍ରଦୂଷଣ (fecal contamination) ନିମନ୍ତେ ପରୀକ୍ଷା କରାଯାଏ । [୧୨][୧୩] ଏକାଧିକ ଗବେଷକ ପରୀକ୍ଷା କରି ଦେଖୁଛନ୍ତି, ଇ କୋଲାଇ ବାହାରେ ଅଧିକ ସମୟ ପର୍ଯ୍ୟନ୍ତ ରହିପାରୁଛନ୍ତି । [୧୪][୧୫]
