ଇଂରେଜ ଧର୍ମଯାଜକ ଓ ଲେଖକ

ଆମସ ସଟନ (୧୮୦୨ ସେଭେନୋକ (Sevenoaks) କେଣ୍ଟରେ– ୧୭ ଅଗଷ୍ଟ ୧୮୫୪ କଟକ, ଓଡ଼ିଶାରେ) ଜଣେ ଇଂରେଜ ଜେନେରାଲ ବାପ୍ଟିଷ୍ଟ ମିଶନାରୀ ଥିଲେ ଯିଏ ହିମ୍ନ ଲେଖକ ଥିଲେ ।[୧]

ସେ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଭାଷାରେ ପ୍ରଥମ ଇଂରାଜୀ ବ୍ୟାକରଣ ୧୮୩୧ ମସିହାରେ ଲେଖିଥିଲେ,[୨] ସନ ୧୮୩୯ରେ ଇତିହାସ, ଓ ସନ ୧୮୪୦ରେ ଭୂଗୋଳ, ତା ପରେ ସନ ୧୮୪୧-୪୩ରେ ପ୍ରଥମ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ବ୍ୟାକରଣ ଲେଖିଥିଲେ,[୩] ଓ ଓଡ଼ିଆ ଭାଷାରେ ବାଇବେଲ ଅନୁବାଦ କରିଥିଲେ ।

ସେ ଗୋଟିଏ ଭଜନର ସ୍ୱର ସଂଯୋଜନା କରିଥିଲେ ଯାହା ଅଲ୍ଡ ଲାଙ୍ଗ ସାଇନେ: ହେଲ, ସୁଇଟେସ୍ଟ, ଡିଅରେସ୍ଟ ଟାଇ ("Auld Lang Syne": "Hail, sweetest, dearest tie.") ସ୍ୱରରେ ଗାଇବା ନିମନ୍ତେ ଲେଖାଥିଲା ।[୪] ସେ ସନ ୧୮୩୫ରେ ମିଶନ ଟୁ ଓଡ଼ିଶାର ଇତିହାସ:ଜଗନ୍ନାଥ ମନ୍ଦିର ସ୍ଥଳ ବିଷୟରେ ଲେଖିଥିଲେ । [୫][୬][୭][୮]

ଆମସ ସଟନ‌ଙ୍କୁ ୨୧ ବର୍ଷ ବୟସ ହୋଇଥିଲା ବେଳେ ଜେନେରାଲ ବାପଟିସ୍ଟ ଫରେନ ମିଶନାରୀ ସୋସାଇଟି ତାଙ୍କୁ ମିଶନାରୀ ସେବା ନିମନ୍ତେ ନିଯୁକ୍ତ କଲା । ଡର୍ବିରେ ଥିବା କନେକସନର ମିଶନାରୀ ସୋସାଇଟିରେ ତାଙ୍କୁ ଏହି ପଦବୀ ନିମନ୍ତେ ଶିକ୍ଷା ଦିଆଯାଇଥିଲା । ହୋମ ମିନିସ୍ଟ୍ରିରେ କିଛି ଦିନ କାମ କଲାପରେ ବାପଟିସ୍ଟ ମିଶନାରୀ ସୋସାଇଟି ସନ ୧୮୨୪ରେ ତାଙ୍କୁ ମିଶନାରୀ ଭାବରେ ଭାରତ ପଠାଇଲେ, ଏହାର ଦୁଇ ବର୍ଷ ପୂର୍ବରୁ ପ୍ରଥମ ଦୁଇ ବାପଟିସ୍ଟ ଉଇଲିୟମ ବାମ୍ପଟନଜେମସ୍ ପେଗ ଓଡ଼ିଶା ଆସିଥିଲେ । ପତ୍ନୀ ଚାରଲୋଟ ସଟନ‌ଙ୍କ ସ‌ହିତ ସେ ଜାହାଜରେ କଲିକତା ଆସିଲେ ଓ ପରେ କଟକରେ ୧୧ ମାର୍ଚ୍ଚ ୧୮୨୫ତାରିଖ ଦିନ ମିଶନାରୀ କାମରେ ଯୋଗଦାନ କଲେ । ସେଠାରେ ପ‌ହଞ୍ଚିବାର ପରେ ପରେ ତାଙ୍କ ପତ୍ନୀଙ୍କର ଦେହାନ୍ତ ହେଲା ଓଡ଼ିଶାର ପୁରୀରେ; ପରେ ଜଣେ ଆମେରିକୀୟ ବାପଟିସ୍ଟ ମିଶନାରୀଙ୍କ ବିଧବା ଜେମ୍ସ କୋଲମ୍ୟାନଙ୍କୁ ସେ ଦ୍ୱିତୀୟ ବିବାହ କରିଥିଲେ ।[୬][୮][୯][୧୦][୧୧]
