ଘଟଣାର ଦୁଇ ଦିନ ପୂର୍ବରୁ, ୨ ଫେବୃଆରୀ ୧୯୨୨ରେ, ଭଗବାନ୍ ଅହିର ନାମକ ବ୍ରିଟିଶ ଭାରତୀୟ ସେନାର ଅବସରପ୍ରାପ୍ତ ସୈନିକଙ୍କ ନେତୃତ୍ୱରେ ଅସହଯୋଗ ଆନ୍ଦୋଳନରେ ଅଂଶଗ୍ରହଣ କରୁଥିବା ସ୍ଵେଛାସେବୀମାନେସ୍ୱେଛାସେବୀମାନେ ବଜାରରେ ଅଧିକ ଖାଦ୍ୟ ମୂଲ୍ୟ ଏବଂ ମଦ ବିକ୍ରିକୁ ବିରୋଧ କରିଥିଲେ । ''ପ୍ରଦର୍ଶନକାରୀଙ୍କୁ ସ୍ଥାନୀୟ ଦରୋଗା'' (ଇନ୍ସପେକ୍ଟର) ଗୁପ୍ତେଶ୍ୱର ସିଂ ଏବଂ ଅନ୍ୟ ପୋଲିସ କର୍ମଚାରୀମାନେ ମାଡ଼ ମାରିଥିଲେ । ଅନେକ ନେତାଙ୍କୁ ଗିରଫ କରାଯାଇ ଚୋୖରି ଚୌରା ପୋଲିସ ଷ୍ଟେସନରେ ତାଲା ପକାଇ ଦିଆଯାଇଥିଲା। ଏହାର ଜବାବରେ ସ୍ଥାନୀୟ ବଜାରରେ ୪ ଫେବୃଆରୀରେ ପୋଲିସ ବିରୋଧରେ ଏକ ଶାନ୍ତିପୂର୍ଣ୍ଣ ବିକ୍ଷୋଭ ପ୍ରଦର୍ଶନୀ ଡକାଯାଇଥିଲା। <ref name="a">Event, Metaphor, Memory – Chauri Chaura 1922–92 by Shahid Amin</ref>
