ଓମ ପୁରୀ ଅମ୍ବାଲାରେ ଏକ ପଞ୍ଜାବୀ ପରିବାରରେ ଜନ୍ମଗ୍ରହଣ କରିଥିଲେ। ତାଙ୍କ ପିତା ରାଜେଶ ପୁରୀ ଭାରତୀୟ ରେଳବାଇ ଏବଂ [[ଭାରତୀୟ ସ୍ଥଳସେନା|ଭାରତୀୟ ସେନାରେ]] କାମ କରୁଥିଲେ। ତାଙ୍କର ଜନ୍ମ ପ୍ରମାଣପତ୍ର ନଥିବାରୁ ତାଙ୍କ ପରିବାର ତାଙ୍କ ଜନ୍ମ ତାରିଖ ବିଷୟରେ ଅନିଶ୍ଚିତ ଥିଲେ ମଧ୍ୟ ତାଙ୍କ ମା ସେ [[ଦଶହରା]]<nowiki/>ର ଦୁଇ ଦିନ ପରେ ଜନ୍ମ ହୋଇଥିଲେ । ଯେତେବେଳେ ସେ ପାଠପଢା ଆରମ୍ଭ କରିଥିଲେ, ତାଙ୍କ ମାମୁଁ ୧୯୫୦ ମସିହା ମାର୍ଚ୍ଚ ୯ ତାରିଖକୁ ତାଙ୍କର ଜନ୍ମଦିନ ବୋଲି ଲେଖିଥିଲେ । କିନ୍ତୁ ଯେତେବେଳେ ଓମ ମୁମ୍ବାଇ ଗଲେ, ସେତେବେଳେ ଦଶହରା ପାଳନ ସମୟ ଦେଖି, ସେ ନିଜର ଜନ୍ମ ତାରିଖ ୧୮ ଅକ୍ଟୋବର ୧୯୫୦କୁ ବଦଳାଇଥିଲେ । <ref name="biography">{{Cite book|title=Om Puri: Unlikely Hero|last=Puri|first=Nandita|date=2009|publisher=Roli Books|isbn=978-9351940753}}</ref>
