ସେଇ ଧକ୍କାରେ କେନେଡ଼ିଙ୍କ ପିଠି ଆଘାତଗ୍ରସ୍ତ ହୋଇଥିଲେ ହେଁ ସେ ତାକୁ ଖାତିର ନକରି ନିଜ ଦାନ୍ତରେ ଗୋଟେ ଲାଇଫ ଜ୍ୟାକେଟ ଧରି ଜଣେ ନିଆଁରେ ପୋଡ଼ିଯାଇଥିବା ନାବିକଙ୍କୁ ଉଦ୍ଧାର କଲେ । ନିଜ କର୍ମୀମାନଙ୍କୁ ସେ ଗୋଟିଏ ଦ୍ୱୀପ ଓ ସେଠୁ ଆଉ ଗୋଟେ ଦ୍ୱୀପକୁ ନେଇଗଲେ ଯେଉଁଠୁ ପରେ ସେମାନଙ୍କୁ ଉଦ୍ଧାର କରାଗଲା । ତାଙ୍କର ସାହସିକତା ଲାଗି ନୋମ୍ନୋକ୍ତ ଉର୍ଦ୍ଧୃତି ସହ ନାଭାଲ ଓ ମାରିନ୍ କର୍ପ ମେଡ଼ାଲ ମିଳିଥିଲା ।

Unmindful of personal danger, Lieutenant (then [[Lieutenant, Junior Grade]]) Kennedy unhesitatingly braved the difficulties and hazards of darkness to direct rescue operations, swimming many hours to secure aid and food after he had succeeded in getting his crew ashore. ନଭେମ୍ବର ୧୯୪୩ରେ ତାଙ୍କ ଅଧୀନରେ PT-59 ଗନବୋଟ ଚୋଇସିଉଲ ଦ୍ୱୀପରୁ ସୈନିକ ମାନଙ୍କୁ ଉଦ୍ଧାର ମିଶନରେ ଅଂଶଗ୍ରହଣ କଲା । ଜାନୁଆରୀ ୧୯୪୪ ରେ ନିଜ ଅଣ୍ଟା ବ୍ୟଥା ଲାଗି ସେ PT-59 ଛାଡ଼ି ଆମେରିକା ଫେରିଆସିଲେ । ସେହି ବର୍ଷ ପରେ ତାଙ୍କୁ ସକ୍ରିୟ ଡ୍ୟୁଟିରୁ ମୁକ୍ତି ମିଳିଲା ।
