Terminology

This image uses the following shorthand terminology for the interfacial energy at the following interfaces:

• Solid-Liquid: ${\displaystyle \gamma _{\mathrm {SL} }}$

• Liquid-Gas: ${\displaystyle \gamma _{\mathrm {LG} }}$ (= surface tension, sometimes referred to simply using ${\displaystyle \gamma }$, such as in the Wikipedia article on Contact Angle or ${\displaystyle \gamma _{\mathrm {LV} }}$ for "liquid-vapour")

• Solid-Gas: ${\displaystyle \gamma _{\mathrm {SG} }}$ (sometimes referred to using ${\displaystyle \gamma _{\mathrm {SV} }}$ for "solid-vapour", such as in the Wikipedia article on Contact Angle)
